 Refugio County Memorial Hospital (Map item 41) admitted its first patient on Feb 2, 1940. It has provided continuous service to the citizens of Refugio County since that date.
The original hospital was constructed by the County of Refugio and expanded by an addition in 1962. It was originally operated by several religious orders and in May of 1974, the county took over the entire operation. Early in 1977, the 65 th Texas Legislature authorized the creation of the hospital district and this was confirmed by public vote on May 1, 1977.
Since its establishment in 1940 Refugio Memorial Hospital has continually strived to provide the finest emergency and definitive care to its citizens. Over the years the population and the economy have changed, but the mission and values of the hospital have remained constant.
By the end of 2008, the Memorial Hospital is scheduled to begin construction on a new Physical Therapy Addition approx. 5,000 sq ft) and a free standing Wellness Center Building (3,000 sq ft). The location is to be immediately adjacent to the existing hospital building on the north side.
The Wellness Center Building will include an exercise gym, private exercise room, dressing rooms, lobby/reception area, wellness garden and associated support space. The Physical Therapy Addition will include a new entry, lobby, physical rehab & treatment area, and support space. Also included will be an in-ground therapy pool and asscoiated dressing rooms.
