Honor the dead by serving the living!
Post 6290 members salute the colors during the playing of Taps at the 2007 Memorial Day program.

The veterans of Refugio County have been an integral part of the county since June 3, 1946, when the Refugio County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6290 was chartered.

VFW Post 6290 and the Ladies Auxiliary believe that direct community involvement always has been and will continue to be a VFW priority. Over the years, VFW Post 6290 has sponsored  many Americanism and Patriotism programs within schools and youth organizations in the county, have participated in Memorial Day Ceremonies, Fourth of July celebrations and Veteran’s Day Activities.

VFW Post 6290 Community Service programs are designed to encourage community service and increase civic pride, which ultimately enhances education, improves the environment and ensures the availability of health services for our nation’s veterans.

The Citizenship Education program is designed to stimulate interest in America's history and traditions and to promote citizenship, civic responsibility and patriotism while the national VFW's Youth Scholarship programs provide more than $3.5 million in scholarships to our nation's youth. They include Voice of Democracy; Patriot's Pen youth essay contest and Scout of the Year.

The VFW also honor’s outstanding teachers, police officers, firefighters, health officials and emergency medical technicians.

Whether providing scholarships to the nation's youth or helping veterans receive the entitlements they have earned, the VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary is there to honor the dead by helping the living.
