Welcome to Refugio County, located in the Coastal Bend area of South Texas.  Easily accessible from all directions via U.S. Hwy. l83 and U.S. Hwy 77, Refugio County is just an hour from the nearby cities of Corpus Christi and Victoria, and two hours from Austin, San Antonio, and Houston.

Refugio County Community Development Foundation

The five main towns that populate the county include the county seat of Refugio, as well as the neighboring towns of Woodsboro, Bayside, Austwell, and Tivoli. The Refugio County Museum, located behind the Chamber of Commerce office in Refugio, serves as home for some of the most unique artifacts in South

Texas.  Displays include an antique car, one of the original mission bells, Indian items, early farm equipment and many other very special objects of art and history.

Because Refugio is the birthplace of baseball great NOLAN RYAN, the Museum houses a collection of Nolan Ryan memorabilia.

Birdwatchers will find over 400 species identified in the county, including the endangered Whooping Crane which makes its' winter home at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge in Austwell.

Whether you launch your own boat, or hire a guide, fishing in Refugio County will let you experience a little of paradise, as you catch your limit of redfish, black drum and trout.

Refugio Texas Map

Refugio County, rich in history, has been thought of as an oil and gas or a farming and ranching community in recent years.  However, as the county moves into the next century, diversification and broadening  the base of the economy to include tourism, recreation, hunting and fishing  as well as new industry to the area will be the primary focus for economic development.
